Breaking Down Firewood Is Easy!

For those people who don’t always carry an axe or hatchet, this post could come in handy.  Having a good cutting tool like an Axe, Hatchet, Machete, or Saw is always a good item to carry in the wilderness.  But sometimes it just isn’t practical and if Murphy has anything to say about it when you don’t have one is when you will need it most!  So here is a quick video on how to break down larger tree limbs into more useable and manageable sized pieces so that you can break them down into kindling with your fixed blade knife.  If you don’t carry a fixed blade knife with you in the wilderness…well you should learn the 6Ps of Survival.  Proper, Prior, Preparation, Prevents, Poor, Performance.

Here is the breakdown:

1. Find a large dead limb, preferrably something that wasn’t laying flat on the ground absorbimg moisture.

2. Find a tree at least 4 or 5 inches in diameter that has a fork within 2 or 3 feet from the ground.

3. Place the limb in the fork about 18 inches to 24 inches.

4. Apply pressure to the long end of the branch until it breaks off.

  1. With smaller dead wood you can also use the baseball bat method. Which as the name implies means that you grab the branch like a baseball bat and swing it into a large solid tree. Your target for impact should be about 12 inches from the end of the piece you are holding. But beware that vibration from doing this can sometimes hurt your hands so have a tight grip and you should be good to go. Cheers JJ
