Ka-Bar BK2 / Becker Campanion Survival Knife Review

Becker BK2 Companion

The Ka-Bar BK2 or as some like to call it the Becker Campanion is probably the most indestructible knife I have had the pleasure of holding in my hands.  This hoss of a knife is built from ¼” thick 1095 Crovan Carbon Steel.  The handle which fits perfectly into your hand is made of a composite material called Grivory.  While I am sure there are some scientific differences between Grivory and plastic, it basically feels like a tough impact resistant plastic to me.  Don’t get me wrong that isn’t a bad thing because it is the kind of material that appears to be pretty much bomb proof.  However, if you don’t like the Grivory handle you can also opt for a Micarta upgrade.  The biggest strength in the Ka-Bar BK2 is in its simplicity.  This is not a knife filled with a bunch of gimmicky features, it is a knife and that is it.  It is however, strong enough and durable enough to also be used as a crowbar!  For a closer look at all of the specifications on the Ka-Bar BK2 / Becker Campanion checkout the video below!

Ka-Bar BK2 / Becker Campanion Field Test

I have not had the opportunity to utilize this Becker Campanion for a long period of time yet, but I was able to take it out to the field and put it though its paces.  In the video below I use the Becker Campanion to split down through a 3 1/2” Piece of knotty pine, I also split up some kindling and made some thick and thin feather sticks as well as some heart wood shavings for tinder.  Then at the end I also found some metal objects to test it against as well to see how tough the tip is and how well it can penetrate.  I think you will be as impressed as I was!  Take a look at the video below to see my first field test of the Ka-Bar BK2 / Becker Campanion.

Overall Impressions Of The Ka-Bar BK2 / Becker Campanion

All in all I think the Becker Campanion is perfectly suited as an Urban Survival Knife.  It will perform well in a wilderness survival situation but the beefy blade profile, strong tip, large pommel and overall toughness will allow it to be used and abused against the tough material found in urban environments like vehicle glass, construction materials, drywall, sheet metal, plywood, masonry blocks, etc.  The deep grind does allow the knife to make finer cuts, but this knife just wants to be used to hack through a wall to escape a fire or to bash in a window to save a drowning child, the list goes on.  Overall, as an Urban Survival knife I give this a knife an 8.5 out of 10 stars as a wilderness survival knife and a 9 out of 10 stars as an Urban Survival Knife.  To get a better look at or purchase one of these great knives checkout http://southblade.com/products/becker-campanion-bk2

I own a Ka-Bar-BK2 – one of the sturdiest knives I’ve ever owned. I’d highly recommend picking one up if you don’t have one.

This is an awesome knife by Ethan Becker, available from KA-BAR. Great for handling just about anything you could ask from a solid everyday carry survival knife, including batoning wood.

If you are looking for something light. Don’t buy it. If you are looking for something that is rust-proof and requiring no blade maintenance, don’t buy it. If you are looking for the sturdiest, most durable blade in a survival/camping knife, get this one. You can chop a 4″ birch to the ground with this knife. Yet, you can get the thing as sharp as you want. It has no peer when it comes to the amount of abuse it can take. It is well worth the money. Get yourself one.

You can’t really go wrong with any knife from Ka-Bar. Their BK4 Machax is just brutal and feels indestructible in hand. One of my favorite machetes.
