The Katadyn Hiker Water Filter Works Great!

DSC00652Which is probably why it is one of the best selling water filters on the market today.  We all need water and it needs to be clean and fresh.  There are several ways to make water fresh and potable but one of the easiest and quickest ways to get water is to run it through a compact and portable water filter like the Katadyn Hiker.

This Katadyn filter is cost effective, lightweight and extremely easy to use.  The Hiker also has the benefit of being EPA approved and rated to remove 99.9% of all bacteria and protozoa including Giardia and Cryptosporidium.  This filter does remove some viruses but not some of the more uncommon ones, since it has a .03 Micro filter.

The Katadyn Hiker water filter boasts a pump rate of about one liter per minute.  The Hiker also comes with a hydration pack connector and a Nalgene and clean canteen bottle adaptor for making filling easy.  Check out the video below to see the full field review and see the Katadyn Hiker Water Filter in action.

  1. I’ve been using the hiker pro version for about 5 years now, and have had no problems.

Affixing an adapter to fit to camelbak hoses is invaluable unless you are chemical treating on top of filtering or using more traditional canteens.

Carrying an additional water carrier for dirty water sometimes is prudent, streams are easy but if you have a watering point on a trail that involves a water pump but is known for contamination such as Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands trail, it can be hard to work with. Even a gallon sized Ziploc bag would be sufficient.

Only way I can see getting something different would be a lifesaver bottle.

Other item of note, make sure to be careful on handling the unit, especially in your pack since the filter is ceramic, crack it and you are left with an over glorified water pump.

Make sure to keep all caps in proper places and to store clean and dirty water hoses separately, and it’ll keep you healthily hydrated for a long time. 🙂

  2. I have never used this filter, however, I have looked into it before. I have looked into almost all of the portable water filters on the market, and there aren’t any I really trust as none of them remove all of the viruses. I have heard good things from this filter though, but I will keep looking for one that removes everything.

  3. I carry a Sawyer filter in my bag. Light weight, (3 ozs) no ceramic filters, three different size fill bags, cleans easily, (just backflush with clean water with the included syringe) and it’s good for about 1,000 gallons. At only $70 it won’t break the bank either.

  4. Greg,
If you want something more to remove bacteria and viruses you may want to add this to the other water filter. Here’s the info. Hope this helps.

Purify water in as little as 48 seconds with this rechargeable ultra-violet water purifier. The SteriPEN® Ultra is a rechargeable UV water purifier that kills all disease-causing microorganisms in water. It will purify about 50 liters of water per recharge and can purify up to 8,000 liters over its lifetime. The Ultra features a high-contrast OLED screen for extremely easy readability, indoors or out. The screen tells you when treatment is completed, when the battery is low, and if the bulb has reached the end of its life. The internal battery recharges from standard USB outlets such as on computers or solar panels.

Don’t take the risk of drinking questionable water. Carry the SteriPEN with you when you’re on the go to destroy over 99.9% of Bacteria, Viruses, and Protozoa. Whether it be to the mountains on the other side of your state, or a third-world country on the other side of the planet. – See more at:
