About JJ

As a child I grew up in the Midwest on a small farm and fell in love with the outdoors. Later, that led me to join the USAF where I became a USAF Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) Instructor. As a SERE Instructor I have trained in all types of environments. Temperate, Arctic, Desert, and Rain Forest. After four years in SERE I retrained into the counterintelligence and counterterrorism field where I have worked for 11 years. I have traveled to the Far East, Asia, Southwest Asia, Europe, the Middle East and South America. The combination of both careers has thought me to see two sides of a coin. I consider myself a realist and while I enjoy primitive survival living, hiking, camping, and hunting for short periods. I also have the experience & understanding to know that living primitively is NOT fun or easy for long periods. Therefore, I try to be practical and logical in an effort to build a reliable, flexible philosophy of self reliance that can be utilized in any situation. Hopefully reading this blog will help you to do the same.

I was impressed with the fire starter tender. Non toxic and long life…..beat that!! The vasaline coated cotton balls can also be used for minor first aid, waterproofing, or lubrication. Multi purpose and compact….the perfect pack item. Thanks!

Have you seen Coglahn’s Fire Lighters? They’re not as cheap as vaso-balls, but they burn 6 minutes (by my testing) and flare HOT for about 8 seconds when igniting. http://www.ramseyoutdoor.com/product/pid-7935/g-134/index.aspx

So true CJ! Most other tinder’s are not as useful for multiple things.

LP, Yea I ave used them before, they do work well. Typically I usually break them up into smaller pieces, because you usually don’t need the whole thing for one fire. Even after the “Match head” is burn’t off you can still light them with a ferro rod easy enough.

    Thanks for the comments!

Hey JJ – I never heard of a cotton ball and vaseline being used for anyting except first aid and personal care. As soon as I started to read the intro I saw how I’d missed the obvious for lot of decades. You sent me back to my friends at intergalacticshipping.com (doesn’t sound very woodsey does it) to look for a new survival knife. Your videos reminded me that my son had latched onto my hunting knife and my survival knife grew legs during a move.

What a great tip. The savings will be immediate and the uses many.

    Thank you again!
