Professional Grade Gear: Tops Mil-Spie 3.5 Tactical EDC Knife Review

This is a quick look at the Tops Knives Mil-Spie 3.5 Tactical EDC Folding Knife. This is one of the most impressive EDC folding knives that I have ever had the pleasure of using. I give it a 10 out of 10 stars based on my first impressions. However, I will be doing a full review of the knife in the near future after I have had the chance to use it and abuse it in the field! (Update) I have now carried this knife for over a year and I still have nothing but good things to say about it! It performs superbly in everything I have asked it to do.  From cutting landscape fabric in the mud and rocks to just using on a daily basis for open boxes or cutting cord this little knife is an absolute pleasure to use.  The blade holds an edge extremely well, but is still pretty easy to resharpen.  Over the past year I have used it hard and have only had to retouch the edge three times to keep it nice and sharp.

The one thing that I love about this knife more than anything is the knife clip.  The clip is wonderful! I mean that in the strongest terms possible. I can wear this knife in any sort of clothing.  Whether it is a business suit with very thin and flimsy material or heavy duty tactical BDU cargo pants it holds snuggly in place but isn’t too difficult to get out of the pocket easily with one hand.

To date this knife is still my EDC carry knife and I love it! I cannot recommend it enough!

The Tops Knives website offers the following information about this knife and how they came up with the name for this series of knives:

The name Mil-SPIE is an acronym that the DOD came up with several years ago. It stands for (Military-Special Projects Individual Equipment) Pronounced ‘MIL SPY’. This was to enable Special Operation Forces within the Military to help develop, test, evaluate and acquire ‘out of the ordinary’ and ‘outside of normal channels’ items that they require.

TOPS Knives is often approached by individual Operators who advise us of their ideas and the criteria that need to be met for their Unit or Team. The challenge was to develop a small knife with a fairly narrow carrying profile, it had to be strong and light in weight. With this criteria in mind we created and named the Mil-SPIE Knives.
